A Bitter Reunion in Oxford

It was a hot Saturday in Oxford, Mississippi, as LSU arrived to play Ole Miss. The famous tailgate area, known as The Grove, was packed with fans, food, and plenty of anger. This game marked the return of Lane Kiffin, who left Ole Miss for LSU last November.

The fans did not forget how Kiffin departed. Outside the tents, posters and creative signs targeted the head coach. A plane flew overhead pulling a banner that read, "DADDY'S HOME GEAUX TIGERS." The tension had been building for 293 days.

Months of Planning for Kiffin

Supporters spent months planning their response to Kiffin. Michael Yerger, a 65 year old Ole Miss alumnus, began working on a poster last January after the team lost in a national semifinal.

Yerger was upset that Kiffin tried to take Ole Miss players with him to LSU. Yerger said that Kiffin was a cancer if they let him stay. He wanted a coach who actually wanted to be at the school.

Lists of Loyalty and Betrayal

Other fans focused on Kiffin's past comments. Emily Beckemeyer and her daughter Maddie created a list dividing people into those who stayed and those who left. They labeled the loyal ones "Hotty Toddys" and those who left as "Heauxs."

Maddie explained that she felt betrayal and disappointment because Kiffin had previously claimed Oxford was home before leaving.

Another student, Gabrielle Richard, designed a sign that welcomed people to Oxford but told them to stay longer than Lane.

Fans Express Disappointment

Many fans felt fooled by Kiffin, especially after a documentary where he spoke about his love for the school. Chris Jacobs, a fan at the tailgate, expressed disappointment rather than anger. He said Kiffin abandoned his players and team in the middle of the season.

The tailgates featured banners of defensive coordinator Pete Golding walking Kiffin and a tiger on leashes. Other fans wore matching shirts with messages about Kiffin, while stuffed tigers hung from strings. One woman wore a hat that read "HOUSEWIFE," referencing a past lyric dispute that Kiffin had complained about during a press conference.
