Panthers Linebacker Devin Lloyd Dominates Falcons in Road Victory

A Historic Defensive Performance

Devin Lloyd put on a show that his coach will never forget. The Carolina Panthers linebacker dominated the field during Sunday's 34-3 road victory over the Atlanta Falcons at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Lloyd finished the game with nine tackles, one sack, three pass breakups, and two interceptions, including a spectacular touchdown return.

Panthers head coach Dave Canales was amazed by what he saw from the sideline. Canales said after the game that he did not know if he had seen a better performance from a linebacker in his 17 years of coaching in the NFL.

Teammates Stand in Awe

Lloyd signed a three year, 45 million dollar free agent contract in March, and he is already proving his worth. In the locker room after the win, his teammates could not stop praising him.

Cornerback Jaycee Horn called it the most dominant performance he had seen from a defensive teammate. Defensive end Derrick Brown smiled and said that Lloyd deserved to win the NFC Defensive Player of the Week award. Running back Chuba Hubbard even compared Lloyd's play to a video game, calling it a "Madden moment" and labeling Lloyd a "one of one player."

Lloyd actually outscored the entire Falcons team by himself, 6-3, thanks to his third quarter touchdown.

Bouncing Back in Style

The dominant game was a massive rebound for the Panthers. The previous week, Carolina suffered a tough home opening loss to the Chicago Bears, giving up 59 points and 552 yards. Lloyd took it upon himself to change the defensive tone this week.

Aside from his own turnovers, Lloyd also deflected a pass that led to an interception for fellow linebacker Bobby Okereke. In total, the Panthers defense forced five turnovers and held the Falcons to just 286 net yards.

Lloyd remained humble despite the praise. He said the biggest thing was getting the win and that he was grateful for how the team played complementary football to respond to the previous week's loss.

Sealing the Victory

Lloyd helped put the game away late in the third quarter. The Falcons had already benched starting quarterback Cooper Rush after Lloyd's first interception. With just over three minutes left in the quarter, rookie quarterback Jack Strand threw a pass toward Jahan Dotson.

Horn broke up the pass, and the ball bounced right into Lloyd's hands near the 16 yard line. Lloyd avoided a defender and ran it in for the score. Lloyd admitted after the game that once he made that defender miss, he knew he was going to score.
