Dominance on the Mound

Cam Schlittler continues to build his case for major hardware with two weeks left in the regular season. The 25 year old right hander lowered his ERA to 1.95 on Sunday after throwing six scoreless innings against the New York Mets. He held the crosstown rivals to one hit and two walks, reaching 99.9 mph on his fastball in a 2-0 win that sealed the three game series.

It marked the sixth time this year that Schlittler recorded at least eight strikeouts without allowing a run. Only Ron Guidry, who had seven such games in 1978, has produced more in a single season in franchise history. Schlittler has allowed one or zero runs in seven straight starts and in 21 of his 30 starts this season, which is the most in team history.

MVP and Cy Young Talk

Schlittler is tied with Milwaukee Brewers right hander Jacob Misierowski for the lowest ERA in the majors among qualified starters. He leads the American League with 184 ⅔ innings pitched, and his 228 strikeouts are tied for second. Only four qualified Yankees pitchers have posted a lower ERA in a season since 1913.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said the ace deserves consideration for the AL MVP award in addition to the Cy Young. A pitcher has not won the AL MVP since Justin Verlander in 2011 with Detroit. Houston designated hitter Yordan Alvarez remains the favorite, with Tampa Bay third baseman Junior Caminero behind him. Aaron Judge also called Schlittler the best pitcher in baseball, noting that the lineup feels confident whenever he takes the mound.
