Darnold Nears a Quick Return

The Seattle Seahawks are off to a perfect 2-0 start, and they might get starting quarterback Sam Darnold back much sooner than expected. Darnold went down with a glute injury in the first game of the season, but coach Mike Macdonald said the recovery timeline has improved. Darnold could return to practice this week, and Macdonald has not ruled him out for next Sunday's game against the Washington Commanders.

Macdonald made it clear that the starting job belongs to Darnold once he is healthy. "If Sam can play, he's going to play," Macdonald said. "If Sam can't play, then Drew will play. It's pretty simple."

Lock and Smith-Njigba Shine

Backup quarterback Drew Lock has kept the offense moving. In his first start of the season, Lock led Seattle to a dominant 31-7 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Lock completed 19 of 26 passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Lock even credited Darnold for helping him study Arizona's blitzes during a Thursday walkthrough.

Lock's favorite target was Jaxon Smith-Njigba. The receiver caught all three of Lock's touchdown passes, including an 82-yard score on their second play of the game. Smith-Njigba finished with over 150 receiving yards. He is the first Seattle receiver to catch three touchdowns in a game since DK Metcalf did it in 2023.

Defense and Ground Game Dominate

Seattle's defense was excellent. After Arizona tied the game 7-7 in the second quarter, the Seahawks allowed just four more first downs. Seattle outgained Arizona 381 yards to 151. This victory marks Seattle's twelfth straight win dating back to last season, and their tenth straight win over the Cardinals.

The running game also stepped up when starting running back Jadarian Price left with a chest injury. Macdonald said Price's X-rays were negative. Emanuel Wilson took over the workload, rushing 21 times for 92 yards. Tight end AJ Barner capped off a ten-minute drive with a short touchdown run to seal the victory.
