Ready for the Role
Manchester City winger Antoine Semenyo is prepared to step up and lead the attack if needed. The 26 year old Ghana international showed his finishing ability by scoring twice in Sunday's 5-3 win over Sunderland.
City have enjoyed a perfect start to the Premier League season but lack a clear replacement for star striker Erling Haaland. Manager Enzo Maresca has identified Semenyo as the most obvious alternative to the Norwegian forward.
Semenyo addressed the talk about his potential new role. He said he has heard about the backup striker idea and has no problem doing it if needed.
Battle Against Sunderland
The match against Sunderland was a high scoring affair. Alongside Semenyo's double, Haaland, Enzo Fernández, and Rayan Cherki all scored for City. Haaland also missed an open goal during the match.
Sunderland pushed Maresca's side all the way. Brian Brobbey scored a hat trick for the visitors and also hit the crossbar. City defender Rúben Dias had to clear a ball off the line, while Sunderland felt they should have had a penalty for an Elliot Anderson handball.
Semenyo admitted the game was physically demanding. He said, "We knew it would be a fight, and we just needed to stick together collectively and win our individual duels and get three points, which we've done."
Seven Wins in a Row
City have now won seven straight matches in all competitions since losing to Arsenal in the Community Shield. The victory keeps them three points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
Despite the strong start under Maresca, Semenyo insists the squad is not getting carried away. He pointed out that the team has only been together for about seven or eight weeks.
Semenyo explained that while everyone feels good about their current position, they will not get complacent. He added that they just want to keep winning and keep improving.
