Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry is heading into training camp without a new contract extension. However, the guard insists the situation will not cause any issues for his team. 'I don't want there to be no drama,' Curry said, adding that he wants the team to focus on winning.
Curry became eligible for an extension on August 29. He can sign for up to two years and 136.7 million dollars on top of his current expiring deal, which pays him 62.6 million dollars this year. The Warriors have offered him several options, including a maximum contract or taking a smaller pay cut to help the team. Curry has decided to wait and gather more information before making his choice.
Salary Cap Considerations
The decision carries major weight for the franchise. The Warriors currently project to have more than 100 million dollars in salary cap space next summer. If Curry signs a maximum extension, that space will drop to around 45 million dollars.
Curry is aware of these numbers and wants the front office to have the flexibility to make roster moves. He noted that the team has not had this kind of financial freedom in recent years. He plans to remain patient to ensure the team can build a competitive roster around him. Remaining with the Warriors for his entire career is his clear goal.
Ready for Training Camp
Curry is entering his 18th NBA season and will turn 39 in March. He is coming off a year where he was limited to 43 games because of pain and swelling in his right knee. Despite those physical struggles, he feels ready to get back to work.
Curry recently attended a team function in San Diego. He stated that his body is ready for the start of training camp. The Warriors will start their practices next week in Hawaii. They open their regular season on October 21 with a game against the Lakers in Los Angeles.
