Xabi Alonso Backs Chelsea Striker João Pedro to Match Haaland

Alonso rates Pedro alongside Haaland

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso believes striker João Pedro belongs in the same bracket as Erling Haaland. Pedro has enjoyed a brilliant start to the Premier League season, winning the player of the month award for August.

The Brazilian forward has already scored two goals and provided two assists in Chelsea's opening three matches. Alonso is confident that his striker can maintain this level of performance throughout the campaign.

When asked if Pedro ranks alongside Manchester City's Erling Haaland, Alonso agreed. He said that if you count the top strikers in the league, Pedro is certainly up there with Haaland. He added that Pedro wants to score many goals and earn more award nominations.

Benzema comparison

Pedro signed a long-term contract extension last month. The deal keeps him at Stamford Bridge until 2032. This security seems to have boosted his confidence, following a strong previous season where he scored 20 goals in 50 matches.

Alonso also compared Pedro to his former Real Madrid teammate Karim Benzema. Alonso played alongside the French Ballon d'Or winner 195 times. Benzema scored 354 goals in 658 matches for Real Madrid.

Alonso noted that Pedro shares several qualities with Benzema. He described Pedro as complete and intelligent, noting he is good inside and outside the box, dangerous on his left side, and strong with his head.
