Grubb Backtracks on Fan Comments
Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb has apologized to supporters after criticizing fans who booed the team during their recent home game. The comments came after Alabama started slowly in their 50-36 victory against Florida State on Saturday.
During a media meeting on Monday morning, Grubb praised his players for fighting back after going three and out on their first two drives. He then took a swipe at the home crowd, saying that if the players had quit as fast as some of the fans did, they would not have won the game.
By Monday evening, Grubb released a statement to say sorry to the fans. He admitted he should have worded his thoughts more carefully and did not mean to offend the Crimson Tide faithful. He explained that his loyalty to his players simply got the better of him.
Sluggish Starts Cause Concern
The slow start against Florida State was not an isolated incident for Alabama. The team also struggled early in their previous game against Kentucky.
In that matchup, quarterback Keelon Russell turned the ball over three times in the first half. One of those turnovers was a pick six, which left Alabama trailing 17-13 at halftime. The team eventually recovered to win that game 45-17.
After the Florida State win, Alabama scored on nine straight possessions to secure the victory. However, the sluggish opening minutes remain a concern for the coaching staff.
DeBoer Calls for Sharp Execution
Head coach Kalen DeBoer made it clear that the team must find a way to start games much faster. He pointed to mistakes like penalties and missed assignments as the main reasons for the early struggles.
DeBoer said that the players need to be sharp and locked in right from the kickoff. He wants to see the same physical play at the start of the game that the team showed in the final parts of the game against Florida State.
Next up, tenth ranked Alabama will look to improve their early game execution when they host South Carolina this Saturday. Alabama currently holds a 3-0 record, while South Carolina enters the game at 2-1.
