Bryce Young Battles Through Sacks Against Packers
Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young faced constant pressure on Thursday night in a 27-19 loss to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. Young wore a brace on his left knee, following an injury in a Week 3 loss to the Cleveland Browns. Green Bay pressured him on 48.9 percent of his dropbacks, forcing him into six sacks and nine hits.
Under duress, Young completed six of 16 passes for 46 yards with one interception. He threw only one pass over 20 yards. Despite the tough night, Young refused to blame his knee. He said he was fine, adding that everyone deals with something at this point in the season and that nothing is an excuse.
Protection Breaks Down for Carolina
The Panthers faced major protection issues upfront. Right tackle Monroe Freeling started for Taylor Moton, who is out for the season with a fibula and ankle injury. Next Gen Stats credited Freeling with four pressures and a sack allowed.
At left guard, Corey Bullock filled in for Damien Lewis before leaving in the third quarter with a quad injury. Jake Curhan took over for Bullock and allowed a sack. Right guard Robert Hunt was the only starter not charged with a sack. Hunt admitted after the game that the performance was not good and that the Packers executed really good schemes against them.
Offense Stalls After Strong Start
Head coach Dave Canales supported Young after the game. Canales noted that Young battles every week and that the team feels great about where he is physically. Still, Canales admitted the pass rush got after them and that the team needs to protect better.
The Panthers have now fallen to three wins and four losses on the season after winning three of their first five games. Young has faced 64 pressures through seven games, the second most in the league behind Tyler Shough of New Orleans. After setting a franchise record with 11 passing touchdowns early on, Young has thrown just two touchdowns in his last two games.
