A bittersweet move to Seattle

Quenton Nelson is adjusting to life in Seattle after a major trade sent him to the Seahawks. The eight time Pro Bowl guard spent more than eight seasons with the Indianapolis Colts and over 12 years in the state of Indiana. He admitted the change was bittersweet because of his strong relationships in Indy, but he expressed excitement for this next chapter.

Seattle general manager John Schneider traded a 2027 third round pick and a 2028 fifth round pick to acquire Nelson. The move came after the Colts fired general manager Chris Ballard on Oct. 19 following a 2-4 start. Indianapolis fell to 2-5 after another loss last weekend. Nelson said he did not have a say in where he was traded, but he was happy when interim general manager Ed Dodds told him Seattle was the destination.

Fitting into the Seahawks lineup

Nelson was selected sixth overall out of Notre Dame in 2018. He started 136 games for Indianapolis and earned three first team All Pro selections. Seattle is keeping Nelson at left guard, which is the only position he has played in the NFL. To make room, 2025 first round pick Grey Zabel moves from left guard to right guard. Anthony Bradford, who started since his rookie season in 2023, moves to a backup role.

Coach Mike Macdonald praised Nelson for his relentless and physical play on tape. The trade comes as left tackle Charles Cross deals with an ankle injury suffered in a 20-3 win against the Kansas City Chiefs. Cross is expected to miss time, though Seattle has not placed him on injured reserve yet.

Preparing for a new system

Nelson now faces the task of learning offensive coordinator Brian Fleury's offense, which he described as completely different from what he ran under Shane Steichen in Indianapolis. He is leaning on his new teammates and offensive line coaches John Benton and Quinshon Odom to get ready quickly.

He will also face a familiar opponent on Monday night when the Seahawks host the Chicago Bears. The Bears acquired star defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons on Thursday. Nelson called Simmons an amazing football player and competitor, noting that it will be another tough battle between them. Nelson will wear number 53 in Seattle because Dante Fowler Jr. wears number 56.
