Josh Jacobs Clears Up Touchdown Celebration Misunderstanding
Green Bay running back Josh Jacobs says his viral end zone gesture was a tribute to a gospel song, not a reference to his arrest.

End Zone Celebration Causes Online Reaction
Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs scored two touchdowns in a Thursday night win over the Carolina Panthers at Lambeau Field. After his first score on a 1 yard run, broadcast cameras captured him celebrating in the end zone with his hands behind his back. The clip spread quickly on social media, with fans comparing the gesture to his arrest earlier this year.
Jacobs was arrested after an incident at his home in the Green Bay area. He was charged with misdemeanor battery and destruction of property. In September, he pleaded no contest to the charges. He was convicted of battery and received a deferred judgment agreement on the destruction of property charge.
Gospel Song Inspired the Gesture
Jacobs was unhappy with how the clip was received. He explained that the gesture was an ode to the gospel song Break Every Chain, a concept he planned alongside receiver Savion Williams.
According to Jacobs, the pair decided on two celebrations when he returned to action. His first celebration against the Detroit Lions in Week 7 was meant to thank God. The celebration against Carolina was intended to represent the gospel track. He added that several teammates performed the gesture as well.
Jacobs spent the first six games of the season on the commissioner exempt list before returning last week. While he is back on the field, the league has not closed its investigation into potential violations of the personal conduct policy.
Performances and Fan Response
Thursday marked the first home game of the season for Jacobs, and he described the fan reception as positive. He noted that the stadium was packed for the evening match.
On the field, Jacobs finished with 39 rushing yards on 21 carries, averaging 1.9 yards per attempt against Carolina. He added six catches for 13 yards, including a 4 yard touchdown reception in the third quarter. Although the offense had a few quiet stretches, Green Bay secured the victory with strong defensive play.
