Memorial display broken into

A memorial site created to honor victims of the 1958 Munich air disaster has been vandalised. The site features a commemorative glass box located at Manchesterplatz in Munich, which displays Manchester United memorabilia.

The Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation confirmed the break in. The organization reported that the display case was smashed and several items were stolen from inside.

Quick repairs and local support

Manchester United offered to pay for all repairs needed at the site. The foundation declined the club offer because the repairs had already been completed.

Local supporters in Germany helped fix the site right away. Foundation chair Ifty Ahmed thanked local friends, including the group known as the Red Docs, for taking swift action to fix the site. Ahmed stated that while perpetrators damaged the case and stole items, they cannot destroy the legacy or the bond between Manchester and Munich.

Remembering the 1958 tragedy

The plane crash happened on a Munich runway in February 1958. Twenty-three people lost their lives in the disaster.

The victims included eight Manchester United players and three club staff members. The location in Munich remains a place of huge significance for the families of the victims and United fans worldwide.
