Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola to drop Florian Wirtz after a poor performance against Bournemouth.
A Poor Display at Bournemouth
Florian Wirtz struggled to make an impact during Liverpool's 1-0 win over Bournemouth. Former defender Jamie Carragher was highly critical of the midfielder's performance. He called it one of the poorest displays he has seen from Wirtz in a Liverpool shirt.
Carragher expressed concern that this is not just a temporary dip in form. Instead, he believes this is simply the player Wirtz is. He noted that while Wirtz is usually neat and tidy on the ball, he does not offer enough attacking threat. Carragher even suggested that the player's price tag should have been half of what Liverpool actually paid for him.
Tactical Issues and Midfield Comparisons
Wirtz playing in the number 10 role has caused other tactical issues for the team. Carragher pointed out that it forces Dominik Szoboszlai to play in central midfield. He does not believe Szoboszlai is suited to playing in that central midfield position.
To make his point, Carragher compared Wirtz to other Premier League midfielders who cost much less. He mentioned Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall at Everton, Morgan Gibbs-White at Nottingham Forest, and Emiliano Buendía at Aston Villa. He argued that these players deliver key goals and performances for their teams, while Wirtz has failed to do so for Liverpool.
Iraola Must Make a Choice
Liverpool face Manchester City after the international break. Carragher believes manager Andoni Iraola must make a tough decision and leave Wirtz out of the starting lineup. He praised Iraola for making bold choices already, such as dropping Jeremie Frimpong and benching Ryan Gravenberch.
There is still some hope for the midfielder during the upcoming break. Wirtz is heading away on international duty with Germany. Carragher hopes Germany manager Jurgen Klopp can help Wirtz find his confidence. If Klopp can help him get some goals and assists, Wirtz might return ready to make an impact against Manchester City.
