Ruben Amorim says he will adapt his tactics at AC Milan to avoid repeating the mistakes that cost him his job at Manchester United.
A New Approach in Italy
Ruben Amorim is determined to learn from his past. The manager is now in charge at AC Milan, and he is making sure he does not repeat the tactical mistakes that cut his time short at Manchester United.
Amorim lasted just 14 months at Old Trafford. During that stint, he won only 24 of his 63 matches. His signature 3-4-3 formation failed to work in England, leading to his departure. Now in Italy, he is showing a willingness to change. 'I can't repeat my mistakes of Manchester United,' Amorim said. 'If we don't have the characteristics to play in a certain style then we will adapt.'
Tactical Shift Pays Off
We have already seen this adaptability in action. Milan recently secured a 3-0 win against Lecce in Serie A. Instead of his usual three-man defense, Amorim set his team up with a back four.
The change worked well. Christian Pulisic, Adrien Rabiot, and Diego Moreira all scored in the victory. Even so, Amorim is not abandoning his preferred style completely. He noted that the team will likely go back to building with three defenders at some point. He praised Italian coaches, stating they are very good at challenging teams one on one.
Managing Midfield Experience
A key part of Amorim's squad is veteran midfielder Luka Modric. At 41 years old, Modric remains a central figure in the Milan midfield.
Amorim understands how to get the best out of the veteran. He explained that Milan need to keep possession for long periods to suit Modric. He warned that playing a fast transition style would not suit the midfielder, but confirmed Modric is ready to play whenever needed. After five league matches, Milan sit fifth in the Serie A table, just two points behind the leaders, Roma.
Contrast with Manchester United
While Amorim finds his footing in Italy, his former club is still struggling. Manchester United are now led permanently by Michael Carrick, who took over after Amorim left.
United have had a poor start to their Premier League campaign, winning just one of their first five matches. Carrick has had to deal with an injury to Benjamin Sesko, though he has dismissed suggestions that his squad is out of shape. Carrick is trying to find positives, but admits there are not many right now.
