Turnover troubles hold New England back

The New England Patriots are 4-3 following a competitive 30-24 road loss to the Chicago Bears. Turnover differential remains a serious problem for Mike Vrabel's team. New England has not won the turnover differential in a single game this season. They currently sit at minus 7 overall as they prepare for their upcoming game against the Miami Dolphins.

The team has 14 giveaways, which is second most in the league behind the winless Chargers. Meanwhile, the defense has only produced seven takeaways, missing its goal of three per game. Veteran safety Kevin Byard pointed to a fourth quarter play where Caleb Williams completed a 21 yard pass to Rome Odunze just over Byard's fingers. Byard noted that he wants to make that play for his team.

Offense works through roster moves and injuries

Quarterback Drake Maye had a solid game overall, but his second quarter interception in the end zone to Eli Raridon hurt the team. Maye bounced back later, connecting with the rookie tight end for a touchdown on the exact same play call.

Receiver A.J. Brown continues his return from a high right ankle sprain. He has played 101 of 122 offensive snaps in recent games, catching six passes for 75 yards on 16 targets. On the line, guard Alijah Vera-Tucker went on injured reserve Thursday. His contract gives him $250,000 for each game on the 46 player roster, so missing four games will cost him $1 million.

Running back snaps and locker room response

Running back TreVeyon Henderson has seen his playing time drop after sustaining an ankle injury against the Raiders on Oct. 11. Henderson averaged 28 snaps in his first three games, but averaged just 14.5 over his last two full games. Rhamondre Stevenson leads the backfield with 64% of offensive snaps through seven games, while Henderson has 27% and Corey Kiner has 12%.

Despite the loss in Chicago, the team mood remains positive. Coach Vrabel told the players that the margin for error against quality teams is small, but cornerback Marcus Jones noted the group feels close to becoming the team they want to be.

What it means for the next game

New England Patriots at Miami Dolphins (NFL, Sun, 01 Nov): Miami Dolphins win 23%, New England Patriots win 77%; projected score Miami Dolphins 19, New England Patriots 25. Our safest pick: Dolphins +15.5.
