Lonergan knocked out early against Northwestern

Rutgers starting quarterback Dylan Lonergan was forced to leave Saturday's game against No. 24 Northwestern early in the first quarter. The injury occurred during a 5 yard run when Lonergan took a big hit from Northwestern defender Kobie McKinzie.

Following the heavy hit, Lonergan stayed down on the field. He was evaluated in the medical tent on the sideline shortly after the play. While he was later seen running on the sideline, coach Greg Schiano confirmed at halftime that Lonergan would not return for the remainder of the game due to an apparent head injury.

Rutgers turns to backup quarterbacks

With Lonergan sidelined, backup quarterback AJ Surace entered the game to take over the offense. This was not the first time Surace has been called upon to replace Lonergan this year. Surace also filled in for him during a Week 2 game at Boston College, when Lonergan was unable to play because of an undisclosed injury.

Rutgers went through another change under center later in the afternoon. Midway through the third quarter, Sean Ashenfelder replaced Surace in the game. Lonergan had not attempted a single pass against Northwestern before being forced to exit.

Season context for Lonergan

Lonergan entered Saturday's game having thrown for 1,066 passing yards on the season. He had also accumulated 10 touchdown passes against six interceptions prior to the matchup against No. 24 Northwestern.

His early exit leaves Rutgers managing their quarterback position carefully as they move forward. Facing a ranked opponent without their starting passer proved to be a tough situation, forcing the team to rely heavily on both Surace and Ashenfelder to handle snaps under center.
