Rangers Close the Gap
Rangers secured their second victory over Celtic in just over a week with a tense 1-0 win at Celtic Park. The result leaves the home side with plenty of questions as the international break begins.
Striker Ryan Naderi scored the only goal of the match in the first half. It was a silent Parkhead that watched Derek McInnes's team take all three points. This was Celtic's first defeat in the Premiership this season.
For Celtic manager Martin O'Neill, the pressure is building. The boss, who is aged 74, had already watched his side lose 3-0 to Rangers in the Premier Sports Cup last Sunday. This latest defeat means Celtic are now only two points ahead of Rangers at the top of the table.
First Half Action
The game started at a fast pace. Rangers winger Djeidi Gassama found space behind the Celtic defence early on but could not finish. Soon after, Celtic thought they had taken the lead when Auston Trusty put the ball in the net, but it was ruled out because Liam Scales was offside.
Celtic continued to push and Kieran Tierney hit the top of the crossbar with a powerful shot. However, it was Rangers who broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute.
A corner from James Penrice was cleared to Kim Min su. His shot from distance was parried by Celtic goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo, and Naderi was there to react quickly and convert the rebound. Rangers almost added a second before the break when Gassama hit the woodwork and Kevin Kelsy had an effort blocked.
Second Half Battle
The second half brought changes as O'Neill brought on Kasper Hogh. Celtic tried to find an equaliser and forced Rangers goalkeeper Ivor Pandur into a strong save from a Colby Donovan header.
Rangers had chances to make the game safe. Sinisalo saved another effort from Penrice, and Naderi missed a header from close range. Kim also fired wide from distance.
Rangers defender Olwethu Makhanya had the ball in the net in the 74th minute, but his effort was ruled out for handball. Despite Celtic's late efforts to find a way back, the Rangers defence held firm to secure the victory.
