Stafford and Adams Find Their Rhythm
The Los Angeles Rams rebounded from a tough opening week with a dominant 28-6 victory over the New York Giants on Monday night. After a slow start to the season, quarterback Matthew Stafford and wide receiver Davante Adams looked like their old selves. Adams caught eight passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns, proving his pre-game comments right.
Last week, Adams told reporters that fans were panicking too early after the opener. He said that people were fools to think the offense would look poor every single week. Stafford looked incredibly sharp after struggling in Week 1. He finished the game with 327 passing yards, four touchdowns, and one interception, earning a passer rating of 131.3. He was especially effective on deeper throws, completing nine of 13 passes downfield for 219 yards.
The Rams did all this without injured wideout Puka Nacua, relying instead on tight end Terrance Ferguson, who added 54 yards and a touchdown.
Quarterback Injury Derails New York
The New York Giants had a night to forget at SoFi Stadium. Starting quarterback Jaxson Dart left the game on the opening drive after taking a hit to his left knee. While Dart wanted to return to the field, the team kept him on the sideline in street clothes.
Backup quarterback Jameis Winston struggled in relief. Winston threw for just 111 yards and tossed a costly interception in the red zone. The Rams defense pressured Winston constantly, recording 10 pressures in just 18 dropbacks in the first half.
To make matters worse, other key Giants players were banged up. Wide receiver Malik Nabers suffered a shoulder injury in the first half but was able to return. Later in the game, left tackle Andrew Thomas and outside linebacker Brian Burns also picked up injuries during the fourth quarter of the blowout.
Giants Ground Game Disappears
New York hoped to establish a physical run game after rushing for 165 yards against the Cowboys in Week 1. However, the Rams defense completely shut them down. The Giants managed only 52 rushing yards, averaging a meager 2.5 yards per carry.
On defense, the Giants struggled to contain Adams. Safety Tyler Nubin had a particularly difficult night in coverage. Adams caught seven passes for 143 yards and a touchdown with Nubin as the nearest defender.
The Rams also welcomed back defensive star Aaron Donald. Playing in his first game in 981 days after a brief retirement, Donald played 32 defensive snaps and recorded three tackles.
