Joel Embiid Eyes Defense Return After Strong Opener
Joel Embiid posted 13 points and three blocks in a 106-100 win over New York as he aims for an All Defensive season.

Embiid Dominates on Defense
Joel Embiid made a strong statement on defense on Tuesday night in New York. The Philadelphia center recorded 13 points, 11 rebounds, two steals, and three blocks in a 106-100 season opening victory against the New York Knicks.
One major highlight came in the fourth quarter when Embiid blocked a dunk attempt by Knicks center Andre Drummond. Embiid wagged his finger and shook his head after the play. He stated after the game that he thinks this year will bring him back to an All Defensive team like in the past. He added that he felt great, moved well, and felt like he was all over the place. Embiid has earned All Defensive Second Team honors three times, with his most recent selection coming in 2021.
Overcoming Past Health Struggles
Embiid struggled with multiple health issues last season. He played in just 38 games due to right hip complications, left knee management, and appendicitis. During Game 7 of Philadelphia's first round playoff win against Boston, guard Tyrese Maxey fell into his leg. That injury hampered Embiid throughout the second round playoff loss to the Knicks.
His play in the preseason was mixed. He logged six points and eight turnovers against the Brooklyn Nets, then bounced back with 27 points and eight rebounds against Boston in the final exhibition game. On Tuesday night, he showed agility and quick movement on the floor. Embiid noted that playing at an elite defensive level every single night changes everything for his team.
Nurse Applauds Smart Playmaking
Philadelphia head coach Nick Nurse praised Embiid for making smart choices on the court against New York. Nurse said that Joel was "magnificent tonight in making the right play" depending on what was there. Nurse added that hitting the open man and reading the defense is really all the coaching staff asks him to do.
