Kylian Mbappe has revealed how his mother fell in love with Anfield and urged him to sign for Liverpool before he chose Paris Saint Germain.
Anfield Dream for Mbappe's Mother
Kylian Mbappe has opened up about how close he came to signing for Liverpool before his move to Paris Saint Germain in 2017. The French superstar was playing for Monaco at the time and was one of the most wanted young players in Europe.
While several top clubs wanted him, Liverpool made a serious push. Mbappe revealed that his mother was a massive fan of the club and its former manager, Jurgen Klopp. She even travelled to England to see if the move would be right for her son.
His mother went to Anfield and fell in love with it, Mbappe said. He explained that she watched matches by herself to get a feel for the stadium and the atmosphere. She was convinced that Liverpool was the perfect place for him to play.
The Private Jet Meeting
Jurgen Klopp, who now manages Germany, has also shared his side of the story. He previously described the chase for Mbappe as the most expensive non transfer the club was ever involved in.
To keep the meeting secret, a Liverpool delegation flew on a private jet from Blackpool to Nice to meet Mbappe and his family. The jet had five rooms. Once the player and his family were on board, the plane simply flew in circles while they talked.
Klopp said they had a delicious meal and discussed the project while flying. Mbappe remembered the meeting fondly and said he told Klopp that he did not need to convince him because of his massive respect for the manager and the club.
The Decision to Stay in France
Despite his mother's wishes and the impressive pitch from Liverpool, the young forward decided to stay in France. He was only 18 years old and wanted to establish himself in his home country before moving abroad.
Mbappe said he wanted to play in his city of Paris and prove he could be a star in his hometown. He joined Paris Saint Germain on an initial loan deal that later became permanent for 180 million euros.
After a highly successful spell in Paris, which included winning the World Cup with France in 2018, Mbappe eventually left the club. He joined Real Madrid in 2024.
